My Low-Sugar Journey: Update #3 (“Begin Again”)

Hello and welcome back!

I don’t know about you, but I love this time of the year! Fall is definitely my favorite season. The weather starts cooling down enough for me to add a cozy blanket to my bed, sip some hot tea, and break out the slow-cooker to make some tasty soups and stews (at least when I have a working kitchen, which I still don’t).

I also think fall is a great time for fresh starts. Even though school begins in mid-August around here, the year still feels new. There are football games on Fridays, I haven’t lost all of my pencils yet, and the high school seniors in my classes haven’t succumbed entirely to “senioritis.” It’s a good situation all around.

Apparently, I’m not alone in feeling that October is a good time for a new beginning. The theme of this month’s Yoga With Adriene calendar (from @fwfglife on Instagram) is “Begin Again.” It’s the perfect theme for my life right now, because the chaos of remodeling and living without a kitchen has seriously messed up my routine. Even though I can’t put all the pieces back together yet, I can take control of ONE thing and make the effort to move each day.

What better excuse to come back to the mat?

In a previous post, 5 Tips for Your Home Yoga Practice, I mentioned that I’m not a huge fan of 30 day challenges, and that’s still true. I tend to miss a day and end up feeling defeated, so I’m not looking at this calendar as a “challenge” per se. I will try to do as many days as I can, but if I miss a day, I won’t try to go back and “make up” what I skipped.

I’ll be tracking my practice with a habit-tracking app called Steady. I like Steady because it is simple and beautiful. You simply tap the date to mark your habit “done” for the day. You can have several calendars for different habits, and you can even customize the background. Sometimes the desire to continue a streak is the little push I need. Here’s how it looks:

I’ve seen a motivational quote floating around Pinterest a lot lately that says, “You don’t need a new year for a fresh start. You just need a Monday.” But really, you don’t even need a Monday. Anything–a new week, a new month, a new season, or even a new minute–can be a fresh start. There’s no need to wait. So here’s to fresh starts, new seasons, and good decisions. Have a great week!
